About Dr. Irwin Abraham
Dr. Abraham is a renowned sports medicine specialist based in New York City. He specializes in evaluating and non-surgically treating lower back pain, shoulder conditions, and other chronic physical ailments related to tendons, ligaments, and joints. From his practice located in Manhattan's Upper West Side, he offers a broad spectrum of treatments to his patients.
Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, Dr. Abraham completed his Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry at the University of Chicago. He later attended the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California. He underwent his residency training at Lincoln Hospital in New York City, where he also served as the chief resident in his final year.
After his residency, Dr. Abraham moved to Rochester, New York, where he operated a private practice specializing in internal medicine until 2005. During this time, he also served as a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry from 1980 to 2005. In 1978, he took a week-long course in Rochester under the guidance of the eminent Dr. James Cyriax, a prominent figure in orthopedic medicine. In 2005, he shifted his practice to New York City, narrowing his focus solely to sports medicine and orthopedics.
Dr. Abraham currently lives in New York with his wife, Dr. Lisa Handwerker, a practicing pediatrician. When not treating patients, he loves running, cooking, and collecting contemporary ceramic art. He also holds a fervent interest in baseball and hopes to hone his skills and join a senior league team.

Dr. Abraham is a certified participant of the instructional program run by the British Society of Musculoskeletal Medicine. This has equipped him with specialized skills in diagnosing and treating soft-tissue issues, including those involving tendons, ligaments, and joints.

These sessions revolved around effective strategies for managing chronic low back pain.
